It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with sussing out the healthy habits that real women make time for in their hectic schedules. But, hearing the spectrum of tips and tricks used by regular women got us wondering: what would your doctor do? What rituals and habits do doctors hold sacred once they leave the office?

So, we asked practicing internist, Dr. Oz regular, and mom of three Dr. Nancy Simpkins to tell us the 5 healthy habits she always makes time for:

1. I always try to eat daily fruits and vegetables. The majority of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need come from fruits and vegetables. I am basically a cheap candy addict, so I have to eat lots of fruits and vegetables to balance it out!

2. I exercise daily. I start every day with a 4:30 AM run. It’s the way I know to get my day going. It’s physical, it’s mental, and it’s spiritual. In addition, I try to do yoga 2-3 times a week; it helps to stretch all the overused muscles.

3. I observe one new thing every day. When I see patients in my office (which I have done for 27 years), I always try to engage with each patient on a new topic about himself or herself.

4. I put my phone away for one full meal each day. It is very difficult for any of us to get through a meal without looking at our phones. I am EXTREMELY guilty of this! Now, I try when I am having dinner with my husband, to put my phone away and concentrate on our conversation.

5. I try to make myself a little bit better today than yesterday. This has always been my mantra and the one that I have taught my three kids. We are humans, we make mistakes, so try to learn from each one and become a better version of you.
